Questions about the fields of a German vehicle registration

How many fields are read from a German vehicle registration?

Fahrzeugschein24 reads 65 fields from the Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I. All of them are listed on this page, each with the box it sits in on the paper. What the route from a photo to a finished vehicle record looks like is shown under reading a registration document.

Where are HSN and TSN on a German vehicle registration?

The manufacturer key number (HSN) is in box 2.1 and the type key number (TSN) in box 2.2. The version key number follows directly after it in box 2.2. You get the three entries separately, plus the printed content of box 2.2 as a whole. There is more under HSN and TSN explained.

Where do I find the VIN on a German vehicle registration?

The vehicle identification number stands in box E, and the check digit beside it in box 3. Both come back separately, and the check digit is read off the paper rather than calculated, which is what makes it worth holding against the number. See the VIN and its check digit.

Is the older Fahrzeugschein read as well?

Yes. The older Fahrzeugschein issued before the changeover is read just like the current Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I, and both come back in the same result format. Your downstream processing does not have to tell the two document types apart.

Can I check where a single value came from?

Yes. Every value comes with the place it was found on the document, and the matching image crop can be switched on in your account. A doubtful case then means checking one value instead of proof-reading the whole page.

Are entries added from Part II or from a vehicle database?

No. Only the document you upload is read. Nothing is guessed, nothing is derived from another box and nothing is looked up in a vehicle database. A box left blank on your paper stays blank in the result.

How do the fields get into my own software?

Either you work with them in your account or they go straight into your system, as described under connecting your software. Which value arrives under which name is listed in the technical documentation.

What is the best way to capture the document?

A phone photo on the forecourt is enough, and a desk scan works just as well; see capturing the document. How a hurried, angled photo still becomes readable text is described under text recognition on the registration document.

Can I tell whether a registration document has been tampered with?

From the Business plan on, every uploaded image is additionally screened for traces of later editing. The result is a pointer for your own review, not an official confirmation of authenticity. What is looked at is described under screening the image for irregularities.

What does reading these fields cost?

The free plan includes 15 extractions a month, without a credit card. Above that, Starter is 19 euros, Business 149 euros, Scale 599 euros and Enterprise 1,999 euros net per month. Every plan is set out on the pricing page.

What happens to the uploaded registration document?

The image is used for processing only and is not stored. What is kept is the extracted data and the log data belonging to your account, and processing takes place in Germany and the EU. The details are under security and data protection; further questions about the process are answered in the general FAQ.
